2006-2007 Charity of the Year Award
The Newcomers & Friends Club of Central Hunterdon County honored
the Good News Home for Women with the presentation of its "2006-2007 Charity of the Year" award.
While
fulfilling our mission the Good News Home reaches out to establish relationships and activities that benefit the
community.
Center for Educational Advancement
The Good News Home has had a two-way relationship with the Center for Educational
Advancement (CEA) for many years. CEA provides employment, job and social skill preparation and support for persons
with disabilities or other social disadvantages. Our residents in recovery have made use of these valuable
services, but we have also provided a supported employment proving ground for other members of the community through
CEA. In making a job coaching environment available to CEA we have helped individuals with disabilities to
obtain job placements.
Drug
Awareness for Youth
Our
staff and residents participate in local school, church and community organizations’ drug awareness and prevention
programs.
Family Support Meetings
For family members and other loved ones of the chemically dependent we provide family support meetings. These meetings are free of charge and open to the general public.
Referrals and Support Resources
We
are contacted by many women and/or their family members interested, and sometimes desperate, in breaking the devastating chains
of addiction. Many factors determine admission to our program. Unfortunately at times we just do not have enough
beds to meet the need. If we are unable to provide direct services we assist women and their families by offering
alternatives and referrals. At whatever point someone is seeking help there is support available. Additionally
our web site page "Resources and Links" provides a wealth of information for those in need of guidance and/or treatment.
Our executive director, Ernestine Winfrey, brings recognition
and merit to the quality of the treatment program offered at the Good News Home:
Governor's Professional Addiction Council
Ernestine is a standing member of the Governor's Professional
Addiction Council (PAC). The Council works directly with the assistant commissioner
of the New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services' Division of Drugs and Alcohol.
In 2003-2004, Ernestine served on the New Jersey Governor's
Task Force for establishing treatment standards for the alcohol and drug treatment continuum of services.
Workforce Investment Board
Ernestine is an active and working partner
of the government sponsored Workforce Investment Board (WIB) serving residents of New Jersey’s Hunterdon, Somerset
and Middlesex counties. Representatives
of WIB determine whether the local workforce readiness system, which includes “One-Stop Career Centers,” is meeting
the needs of the labor market and customers. WIBs engage in a process of program
coordination; they set priorities, recommend resource utilization, and ensure that services, such as job, training, education
and housing opportunities, are accessible to all those in need.
GOAL Project
As a volunteer recovery mission team member of GOAL's SARAH
Project, Ernestine embarked on a journey to Nairobi, Kenya in Africa in April of 2005 and in July of 2006.
The SARAH Project team's vital training of clergy, health care providers and teachers in Kenya focused on the
prevention of substance abuse to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS. GOAL (Global Outreach for Addiction Leadership and Learning)
Project is an American not-for-profit Anglican Mission agency. GOAL recruits and seeks recovery mission teams in
order to respond to the many requests for specialized addiction training throughout the world.
